Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Mental Health and Dual Diagnosis

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Mental Health and Dual Diagnosis

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

IOP tends to be a best fit for those who do not need inpatient level of care but when symptoms require greater therapeutic support than  what can be achieved in the individual outpatient counseling.  IOP is structured psychotherapy in a small group format. Group settings are effective in developing self-awareness, emotional management, and social awareness.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

PHP program is for individuals who do not need to stay in the hospital but still require a highly structured outpatient program – often, acting as a bridge for those transitioning from inpatient care. PHP provides a structured program of outpatient psychiatric services as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric care. It’s more intense than care you get in a doctor’s or therapist’s office. You get this treatment during the day, and you don't have to stay overnight.

What is the difference between IOP & PHP

The difference between IOP and PHP level is both the time commitment, the intensity of the program, the patient responsibility in the program and outside of the program. Simply put IOP is appropriate if you have a mindset of "I can do it but I need some help" and PHP is "I cannot do anything and have no idea where to start". PHP is going to much more instructional, and IOP is going to be more about application. PHP provides a safe validating place 5 days a week, IOP provides that 3 days a week, but encourages you to make changes during your off time.

PHP meets 5 days a week for 5 hours a day (including lunch). IOP meets 3 days a week for 3 hours a day. PHP is like a full time job. IOP is like a part time job. PHP helps you figure out medication and tools to use. IOP teaches you to apply those tools. PHP approaches things more hands on. IOP expects you to invest and do more.

In summary, while both IOP and PHP offer structured therapy and support, PHP provides a higher level of care and supervision than IOP. The choice of program will depend on the individual's specific needs and the level of care recommended by our qualified and trained mental health professionals.
