TMS Frequently Asked Questions

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure used to treat depression and other mental health conditions. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain thought to be involved in mood regulation. The procedure is performed using a device that generates magnetic pulses, which are applied to the scalp over the targeted areas of the brain.

How does TMS work?

TMS works by stimulating the nerve cells in the brain with magnetic fields. The magnetic fields cause a small electrical current to flow through the nerve cells, which helps to activate or "reset" the brain's mood regulation system. This can help to relieve symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions, and improve overall well-being.

What are the benefits of TMS??

TMS is a non-invasive procedure with no systemic side effects, making it a safer alternative to other forms of treatment such as medications or ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

TMS does not require any type of sedation, so you will remain awake and alert during the procedure.

TMS has no known long-term side effects.

TMS can be combined with other treatments, such as medications or psychotherapy, to provide a comprehensive approach to treating mental health conditions

Does NeuroStar TMS treatments hurt?

During the session, you will feel a tapping sensation on your head. Each treatment session lasts around 19 minutes. Some NeuroStar patients experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during the first week of treatment. This is usually temporary and subsides in subsequent treatments. Click here for a full list of possible side effects associated with NeuroStar.

What can I expect during a TMS session?

During a TMS session, you will be seated comfortably in a chair. A TMS device will be positioned near your head, and magnetic pulses will be applied to the scalp over the targeted areas of the brain. Each TMS session typically lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, and you will remain awake and alert throughout the procedure.

What does TMS treat?

NeuroStar TMS therapy is approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. Patients who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement using antidepressant medications now have a  non-invasive treatment option that has been proven to be effective and safe with little to no side effects.

Are there any risks associated with TMS?

TMS is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, but some people may experience side effects such as headaches or discomfort during the procedure. It's important to discuss any concerns or questions about TMS with your healthcare provider, and to report any side effects or symptoms you may experience during or after the procedure.

Is TMS like ECT?

TMS is NOT ECT. There are no hospital stays involved, no sedation, no memory loss and no downtime. TMS treatment allows you to remain awake and alert during each treatment with very little to no side effects.

Will I be alone during treatment?

You will not be alone during treatment with our office. Our TMS treaters will be right by your side to chat with you and keep you company. Each patient has the same treater for each treatment and your treater will get to know all of your preferences to help you feel as comfortable as possible.

What does TMS feel and sound like?

TMS feels like a tapping sensation. Some patients experience discomfort and other patients say they do not feel much of anything at all. During TMS the machine will make a clicking sound. Patients wear ear plugs and can listen to music, watch TV, chat with their treater or sit back and relax.

Do I stop taking my medications during treatment?

We advise our patients to continue taking their medications as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by our Medical Director or the doctor who is managing your psychiatric care. Each patient is different though so it is best that you discuss any changes with your doctor and alert the TMS Coordinator and your treater.

What are the most common side effects?

The most common side effect is discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment.

Is NeuroStar TMS Therapy right for me?

TMS may be a good option for individuals who are looking for a non-invasive, effective treatment for depression and other mental health conditions.

In conclusion, TMS is a safe and effective treatment option for individuals who are looking for an alternative to traditional forms of treatment for depression and other mental health conditions. If you're interested in learning more about TMS, please contact us.
